Now, for what I DID like about Sunshine loved the aesthetics and the environments and the feeling of interconnectivity between worlds. On top of all that, collecting the 240 blue coins and getting all 120 shines was meaningless absolutely no point to it besides a different ending screen. Or how about collecting the red coins in Ricco Harbor on a blooper, only to discover that you need to make a life-or-death jump to get to the shine otherwise you die and have to start all over?Īnd how about Yoshi and his disappointing showing in this game? He dies when you touch water, he's limited-use unless you find fruit for him to eat using his juice barf lessens the amount of time you can ride him. Try collecting all the blue coins in Noki Bay without a guide it's impossible. The level design was also needlessly frustrating. Mario's movement/controls felt super imprecise and too loose. Mind you, I enjoyed a lot of elements about it, but. I 100%ed the game a week ago and it's by and far the worst 3D Mario. But it’s not that bad and I’ve gotten kind of used to it. I wish they would add proper gamecube controller support for it. The movement goes from 0 to 100 too quickly and it’s a bummer to miss out on the analog triggers. The controls in the switch version don’t quite feel right though, unfortunately. It’s the reason I bought 3D all stars.Time to replay an underrated, unique and fun game.

It has a completely different control mechanic with FLUDD and it has cinematic and extended voice acting, which is kind of jarring for the first time.īut you are right OP, those are just distractions from the core of what sunshine is an amazingly inventive and well controlling platforming game that is a huge evolution on from Mario 64. It has a tropical theme which I guess rubs some people the wrong way. It was obviously rushed and buggy compared to the normal Mario perfection. Luigi’s Mansion was shit on because it was not the Mario game people expected at launch, and then when Sunshine did come out it was shit on for a lot of reasons. The Gamecube was a weird time for Nintendo reviews and opinions. I'm not really making an argument here, your post just make me think about the game in a way I haven't in a while. As a child, I didn't mind that, and now it doesn't seem to matter how many years go by my familiarity with the game's controls and physics never deteriorates.

I think full enjoyment of Sunshine isn't possible without getting really good at it, which requires putting up with its shit for a while. But that's not a brag, I grew up with the game and revisited it many times over I've just practiced that much. I'm currently at ~75 shines in 3D All-Stars and have nearly as many lives, so I can't really sympathize with game overs anymore either.

It's difficult for me to go back in the shoes of someone who hasn't mastered Sunshine's controls I know I used to struggle with those same falls, but now that I know how to skip whatever chunk of Ricco Harbor's girders I feel like with well placed somersaults/spin jumps/wall jumps/hovers (or even just bypass the whole thing by spin jumping and hovering to the underside of the cage lol), or the many alternate routes to Pianta Village's episode 3, I've long forgotten what losing a large chunk of progress in Sunshine feels like. but I know it's valid, because it applied to me when the game was new.

I'll always defend Sunshine, but there's not much I can say about this argument because it doesn't apply to me.

Click to shrink. This is an interesting perspective for me to read, as I've played the game enough that I can get pretty much anywhere in a minute tops.
